A Lifelong Sanctuary for Cats in Need
Soft Paws Sanctuary is a nonprofit cat sanctuary based in Maryland, dedicated to providing lifelong care for senior and special-needs cats. Many of the cats who come to us have spent years in shelters or have been overlooked due to age or medical conditions. We exist to give them something they may have never truly known — a safe, loving home where they can live in peace.
Our Story
It Didn't Start With A Plan
It started as a coping mechanism.
Like a lot of people, we were just trying to keep up—working long days, juggling life, doing what you’re supposed to do. On the harder days, we had a ritual we called kitten therapy. We’d stop by the local adoption center, sit on the floor, and let the chaos of small paws and soft purrs reset something in us.
It helped.
Until one day, it didn’t feel like enough.
There was a black cat who had been there for weeks—maybe longer. We had played with him over and over again, watching people pass him by. At the time, we lived in a small apartment. Taking in a cat wasn’t a small decision. It meant rearranging our lives, our space, and our routines. But there comes a point where you can’t look away anymore.
So we didn’t.
We brought him home and named him Kitten Therapy—a reminder of where this all started, and why.
He wasn’t supposed to be the beginning of anything.
But he was.
What started as one decision slowly became a pattern: saying yes when it mattered, even when it wasn’t convenient. Over time, that pattern became responsibility. And eventually, that responsibility became Soft Paws Sanctuary.
We’re not here because we set out to build a sanctuary. We’re here because we chose not to walk away.
There will always be more animals in need than any one person can take in. We know that. But we also know what it feels like to see one—and decide that this time, they don’t get left behind.
That’s where we live, in that decision.
